Kelsey's Story

Growing up in the beautiful town of Steady Brook, Newfoundland, I was incredibly lucky to be surrounded by mountains, rivers, valleys, and oceans and instilled with a sense of adventure and community from a very young age. I strongly believe that adventure, music, art, supportive relationships, and a positive mental attitude are all an important part of building strong communities and more resilient people. In 2013 I moved to Fredericton, New Brunswick to complete a degree as a Loran Scholar ('13) in Interdisciplinary Leadership and Psychology at the University of New Brunswick. In the past four years, I have had the pleasure of being involved with a wide variety of organizations through volunteer, academic, and professional opportunities that have crossed public, for-profit, non-profit, and social entrepreneurship sectors in fields of mental health, arts, public policy, knowledge exchange, food security, athletics, environmental conservation and education. Through each of these experiences, I have seen how passionate people can come together over shared interests and goals to create positive change in themselves and their communities.

I am constantly amazed and inspired by so many individuals and groups who continue to push their own limits and achieve extraordinary goals through dedication, perseverance, and strong relationships with those around them...all while sharing their passion with others. As a young female adventurer, budding entrepreneur, and positive disruptor in the world, I am sharing my journey to encourage others to dream big too! I want to show that by setting a goal, creating a plan and following through with it, and channeling positive energy we are all capable of achieving extraordinary things!

In January 2016, I was selected as a Youth Ambassador for Impossible2Possible (i2P) Expedition Death Valley, and found myself surrounded by people who made crazy sounding adventures I couldn't even dream of doing seem normal. i2P inspired and challenged me to push my mental and physical limits beyond what I thought was possible. I ran my very first marathon in May 2016, followed by the Bad Beaver Ultra 150km 3-day stage race in August that same year, and then a weeklong i2P Expedition Death Valley in September. While running in extreme climates (107 degrees fahrenheit!) and unique geography (sand dunes, elevation changes, canyons, and salt basins) on this expedition we also shared educational curriculum through videos broadcast to thousands of viewers in classrooms and around the world.

This year, I have set even bigger goals - I will be the youngest competitor in the 2017 Grand 2 Grand Ultra 273km self supported foot race taking place in 6 stages over 7 days this September. This world class course challenges participants from around the world to dig deep and discover new strengths while creating strong bonds and friendships with other competitors. It starts on one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, the awe-inspiring north rim of the Grand Canyon and finished on the summit of the Grand Staircase. The course takes competitors through a desert landscape of sand dunes, red rock slot canyons, buttes, mesas, and hoodoos. The stages will vary in distance, ranging from approximately 8 miles (12 kms) to approximately 53 miles (85 kms). Besides water at checkpoints and shelter at night, participants are expected to carry everything they require to complete the journey without external support.

Through this journey, I will be raising awareness and funds for i2P to support their mission to educate, inspire, and empower young people from around the world to reach beyond their perceived limits and achieve extraordinary things. Impossible2Possible uses Experiential Learning Programs and expeditions to deliver the world to the classroom and the classroom to the world! All expedition expenses are covered for Youth Ambassadors and all i2P Experiential Learning Programs are delivered free of charge to schools and students around the world. Get outside & get outside your comfort zone, try something new and exciting, push your personal limits, and share your energy with those around you!

Sending you lots of love and positive vibes :)
